There are 5 complex consonants
in Korean Hangeul. I like to see these
complex consonants as diphthongs. This is because they produced a tensed
version of the simple consonants.
1.
ㅃ
This sounds /pp/ as in
speak (tense)
example:오빠 oppa
meaning elder brother
2.
ㄸ
This sounds /tt/ as in steam (tense)
example: 어때요?
Ottaeyo meaning How is it?
3.
ㄲ
This sounds /kk/ as in skill (tense)
example: 꽃 kkoch flower
4.
ㅉ
This sounds /tch/ as in midget (tense)
example: 오른쪽 oreungjjog
meaning right side
5.
ㅆ
This sounds /ss/ as in sea
example: 아저씨 ajeossi
meaning Mr, uncle
1) Every compound consonant is a fortis. Do not
get confused with aspiration (ㅋ, ㅌ,
ㅍ, ㅊ).
A fortis describes a consonant that is produced with great muscular tension and
pressure of breath, e.g “p” or “t”.
2) Do not get confused with double consonants
which are combination of two different consonants (ㄳ, ㄵ,
ㄼ, ㄽ, ㄾ,
ㄻ, ㅄ, and ㄿ).
